Prof Geraint Lewis

Geraint Lewis, Professor of Astrophysics at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, part of the University of Sydney's School of Physics.

Geraint was born in Old South Wales and was raised in coal-mining country before studying astrophysics at the University of London and earning a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1995.

After research positions in the US and Canada, he moved to Australia at the end of 1999. On the largest scale, he looks at the influence of dark energy and dark matter on the evolution and ultimate fate of the Universe, using gravitational lensing to probe the nature and distribution of the pervasive dark matter, and employing individual stars to magnify the hearts of the most luminous objects in the Universe. Closer to home, he focuses on Galactic cannibalism, where small galaxies are torn apart by the more massive Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxy.

Geraint is passionate about science outreach and is always keen to discuss the mysteries and wonders of the universe. As well as winning several awards for his program of outreach, he has authored three popular science books on cosmology and physics.
